Building a Digital Transformation Roadmap That Actually Gets Executed

Most digital transformation initiatives fail not because of technology, but because of poor planning and change management. Here is how to do it right.

Roadmaps fail when they are slide decks disconnected from budgets, staffing, and incentives. Execution requires sequencing work so each release unlocks measurable value and funds the next wave.

Anchor on business capabilities

Organize initiatives around outcomes like “quote-to-cash in under 24 hours” or “month-end close in three days.” Technology choices become secondary once the capability map and dependencies are clear.

Measure adoption, not just go-live

Go-live is a milestone, not the finish line. Track leading indicators such as percentage of orders created without overrides, time spent in rework, and training completion by role. Feed those metrics back into steering committees monthly.
